After 20 years in the United States, journalist Shoba Narayan and her husband decide to leave their Manhattan home to return to their native South India.
They want their children to not only know their aging grandparents and extended family, but also their Indian heritage.
While moving into their modern, high-rise apartment building, Narayan encounters a cow in the elevator.

The cow and its owner, a milk lady named Sarala, are on their way to christen an apartment. In a when-in-Rome moment, Narayan asks Sarala if she will also bring the cow to bless her family’s new apartment. That encounter leads to a friendship between Narayan and Sarala—a friendship Narayan chronicles in her memoir, The Milk Lady of Bangalore.
