    Billy the Kid, born Henry McCarty and also known as William H.

    Bonney, was an American outlaw of the Old West. His notoriety as a thief and murder was enhanced by his youth. Born in late 1859, homeless and destitute by the age of 16, he turned to crime and during the next five years was involved with nine murders: five for which he was solely responsible, and four in which he may have played a role alongside others.
